The M.D. Forté® alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) skin care system is based on two decades of glycolic acid research resulting in products with higher AHA levels than similar products, giving you the strength to deliver beautiful results— without irritation.

AHA’s shed, or exfoliate, dead cells of the dry outer layer of the epidermis, which results in the appearance of younger, healthier-looking skin. They also limit transepidermal water loss, thereby improving the skin’s moisture-binding ability. Skin that retains more water becomes smoother and younger-looking, and diminishes the effects of sun damage.

Glycolic acid, naturally found in sugar cane and available in M.D. Forté® products, is a particularly effective form of AHA. This is because its small molecular size means more active molecules of glycolic acid are available in a given concentration as compared with lactic acid and polyhydroxy acid (PHA). The result? More activity for faster delivery of unique benefits when and where they’re needed most.

M.D. Forté® is unique in that it achieves a healthy balance between concentration and comfort, maximizing the advantages of glycolic acid with minimal irritation. It does this through a process called partial neutralization. Partial neutralization creates a reservoir of glycolic acid molecules that permits both first and second phase penetration. Because the glycolic acid is released over an extended period of time, higher concentrations of acid can be used to achieve maximum results. 2. What can M.D. Forté® do for me?
   M.D. Forté® contains alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) to normalize the exfoliation process and increase the moisture retaining ability of your skin. These processes generally slow down with age and exposure to the sun. AHA dissolves the cellular "cement" that binds dead cells together and slows living cells from reaching the skin surface (where they can be shed properly). As the dry outer layer is exfoliated by AHA younger, healthier, smoother looking skin is revealed.
    
3. When can I expect to see results?
   Your skin will most likely become softer and smoother within a few days and improvement will occur with continued use. In approximately 2 to 6 weeks you should begin to see and feel visible results, depending on the condition of your skin prior to use. The look of fine lines will diminish and the overall tone and texture of your skin will become more even as time goes on. 4. Is skin tingling normal when using an AHA product?
   Yes. A moderate amount of tingling is normal when AHA products are first applied. It should subside within a few seconds depending on your skin sensitivity. If the tingling is uncomfortable, wait 15 to 30 minutes after cleaning your skin before you apply your AHA product. If undue redness or irritation persist, stop using the product and contact our office.
    
5. What is the deal about AHA and sun sensitivity?
   AHA’s are similar to the prescription products Retin-A, Differin, Tazora, and Avage in that they promote exfoliation and rejuvenation. However, since they lead to the shedding of the dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin more sun is due to penetrate and this can lead to an increased incidence of sun burn. You see, the dead skin cells on the top layer of the epidermis act to scatter sun light in a highly effective manner. They also scatter normal light effectively and this is why prior to exfoliation skin has a dull lifeless appearance. So, when the dead cells are removed by any process, including with M.D. Forté® skin care products, one should always use an effective sunscreen.
